River Cruise Ratings: Reader Awards Explained
What magazine reader polls measure, and how to use them sensibly.
Tell Us What You Want in a River CruiseRiver cruise ratings from Condé Nast Traveler readers are among the most quoted in advertising. Here is what they measure, and how to use them sensibly.
What a Reader Poll Is
The Condé Nast Traveler Readers’ Choice Awards are based on an annual survey of the magazine’s readers, who vote on hotels, destinations, airlines and cruise lines, including a river cruise category. The Travel + Leisure World’s Best Awards work on a similar principle: readers vote, and the magazine publishes ranked lists. Results come out once a year, and lines quote them widely afterwards.
Reader polls are valuable because they reflect a very large number of travelers. Their limits are just as clear: voters choose to take part, they rate the brands they know, and the result shows popularity and satisfaction among that readership rather than which line is right for you.
In one line: a reader award tells you a brand is popular and well liked by people who voted. It does not tell you which ship, river or cabin suits you.

How to Use Awards Well
- Check the year: rankings change and older awards keep appearing in marketing.
- Look beyond first place: lines a few places down may suit your river or budget better.
- Match the category: a river award says nothing about a line’s ocean or expedition ships, and vice versa.
- Compare inclusions: an award-winning line may include more, or less, in its fare than another.
- Ask what the award means for your sailing: ship age and itinerary still matter most.

River Cruise Awards: FAQs
How do the Conde Nast Traveler river cruise ratings work?
They come from the magazine’s annual Readers’ Choice Awards survey, in which readers vote on travel brands and places, including river cruise lines. Results are published on the magazine’s site.
Which line won the river category in 2025?
According to Viking’s October 7, 2025 press release, Conde Nast Traveler readers voted Viking #1 for river cruise lines in the 2025 Readers’ Choice Awards. Check the magazine’s own results page for the full list and any newer year.
Should I choose a line because it won an award?
Use awards as a shortlist, not a decision. A line that suits most readers may not suit your budget, river or travel style.
